1726                       TE SinW 122] Catherine Lloyd was landlady of the Ferry Inn in Britton Ferry, and was the leader of a band of local smugglers. It was she who supplied the money to buy the illegal goods and who then stored them in her Inn. ... Coal ships from Neath, trading with Ireland, were often used to bring contraband into the area.

TE SinW 116] [William Arthur] lived at Great Highway Farm, [Pennard, Gwyr] while his criminal associate, John Griffiths, lived in Little Highway Farm. Both of these farmhouses were used to store illegal goods.

In 1786, a dozen revenue men attacked Great Highway Farm, but Arthur had been tiped-off that they were on their way and was ready for them - 'a Body of desparate followers ... amounted to one hundred'. After a fierce fight, the revenue men had to run for their lives.
